Today marks an important day of reflection for me. Twelve years ago, I faced a life-changing event that brought me into the world of trauma, loss and eventual healing.
It planted a seed and became a catalyst for growth, compassion, and a deeper understanding of myself and others.
On August 1, 2012, I was attacked by a stranger in Fort McMurray's downtown. Escaping with a concussion, bruises, and PTSD, I was fortunate it wasn’t worse. In that terrifying moment, the world as I knew it was destroyed. But from what remained, a stronger, more resilient version of myself was to bloom in the following years.
Over the years, I have shared my journey openly, hoping to inspire and support others facing their own struggles. Through compassion, love, and empathy, I have found healing and a purpose that goes beyond my own experience. This journey has taught me that it’s not the darkness that defines us, but how we emerge after the storm.
A significant part of my healing journey was Asia, my beloved dog, who I lost in December 2021. She was more instrumental in my healing than I ever knew. She was my source of unconditional, non-judgmental love, and losing her changed me to my core. Her presence provided me with comfort and strength, helping me navigate the most challenging moments. Her loss was profound, yet it taught me the depth of love and resilience within me.
She had experienced a very traumatic start to life, and together, we began healing through volunteering, stepping out of the darkness of fear into the light of the community with Pets and Wellness Wood Buffalo.
In the aftermath of the attack, I have embraced every challenge and opportunity for growth. Running half marathons, starting new careers, and even moving forward from traumatic events like the Fort McMurray wildfire have all contributed to the person I am today.
My creation of HeartSpark, a community for young girls to find support and strength, has been a particularly rewarding experience. I see myself in them - who I was and who I was destined to be. It's a joy to see them come together, supporting each other and growing into strong, brave and insightful individuals.
This day has evolved from one of pain and solitude to one of gratitude and pride in myself. I’ve learned to cherish the lessons life has taught me and use them to help others. Whether through my work with HeartSpark, my role as a crisis responder for the 988 Suicide Helpline, or simply sharing my story, I aim to spread hope and compassion.
For anyone who finds themselves in the depths of despair, I want you to know that there is light on the other side. My journey has shown me that even in the darkest times, we have the power to overcome, grow, and find peace. The love and kindness we nurture within ourselves can have a far reach, touching countless lives, creating a beautiful bouquet of positive change.
As I continue to move forward, I carry with me the strength and perseverance I’ve gained, and the unwavering belief that we all have the power to turn our pain into something beautiful. Here’s to new memories, endless growth, and a future filled with hope and compassion.
